Natural Underwater Sound Overview – Soundscapes – April 25, 2023

Dr. Jennifer Miksis-Olds, University of New Hampshire

Dr. Jennifer Miksis-Olds is the Director of the Center for Acoustics Research & Education and Research Professor at the University of New Hampshire, also holding a research positions in the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping and School of Marine Science & Ocean Engineering. Prior to her 2016 arrival at the University of New Hampshire, she spent almost a decade at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University where she was the Founding Director of the Center for Marine Science & Technology. Her research employs acoustic methodologies to answer biological questions in both the marine and terrestrial environments. Her primary interests include patterns and trends in ocean sound, animal behavior and communication, the effect of anthropogenic activities on animals and their environment, and the development of technology to observe animals in their natural environment. Aspects of acoustics, biology, oceanography, ecology, and engineering are combined to create the interdisciplinary approach necessary to extend the remote study of the ocean and of animals in their natural environment beyond where it is today.
