UN Ocean Decade: International Partnerships and Opportunities – May 15, 2024

Dr. Grace Smarsh is currently an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology (S&T) Policy Fellow with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). She first worked with biologically produced signals during her B.Sc., which she received from University of New Hampshire. Dr. Smarsh earned her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University focused on the “Behavioral ecology of singing in the heart-nosed bat, Cardioderma cor”. Her research background has focused on the intersection of acoustics, behavior, and ecology in animals, predominantly in bats. She spent a number of years working in the international sphere. She is interested in the evolving technological landscape that has facilitated expansion of scientific areas, including the study of diverse animals and diverse environments. In her current fellowship, Dr. Smarsh supports efforts in ocean acoustics, including within the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
